Public Media is Essential: Join Us on Protect My Public Media Day

The loss of federal funding for public media last year dealt a devastating blow to more than 1,000 stations that have served American communities for generations.

While their commitments to the communities they serve is unwavering, the elimination of federal funding has created an uncertain future for local public media stations nationwide as we work to sustain the local service communities rely on. Without restored funding, dozens of local public media stations are at risk of closure.

On June 4, we're taking part in Protect My Public Media Day to help protect the future of local public media stations. Visit ProtectMyPublicMedia.org to learn more.

Local public television and radio stations serve as a cornerstone of our communities – delivering independent journalism, educational content and in-person experiences, and emergency information. They exist to strengthen their local communities by providing the reliable, in-depth reporting and distinctive programming that reflects who we are and where we're headed.

You can make a difference. Visit ProtectMyPublicMedia.org on June 4 to urge Congress to restore funding and help ensure local public media stations survive.

Our community's engagement has always been our greatest strength, and we’re grateful you’ve stood with us during this challenging time. With your advocacy and support, public media will continue to be the trusted resource that Americans depend on and deserve.

Why Public Media Matters

  • Delivers life-saving emergency alerts and warnings to keep our communities informed and safe
  • Supports education by partnering with families, educators, and schools
  • Ensures fact-based, trustworthy local news and event coverage
  • Local content, from sports coverage, documentaries, public affairs programming, and more

The Impact of Federal Funding Cuts

Public television and radio stations have faced deep and difficult decisions to maintain local service, including:

  • Reducing or pausing local productions
  • Scaling back local reporting or community coverage
  • Delaying equipment upgrades or infrastructure repairs
  • Limiting educational workshops, events, or resources
  • Reducing outreach to rural or underserved communities
  • Pausing plans for new programs or partnerships
  • Scaling back community events, screenings or listening sessions
  • Reducing coverage of local stories, issues or events

Their commitment to the communities they serve has not changed. But the restoration of federal funding is critical to ensuring local public media stations can sustain the services communities depend on.
