Walk the Walk, a new very timely and informative half hour documentary from Bob Gliner (Schools That Change Communities, Barefoot College) showcases a unique college class where students over a twelve year period from 2007- 2019 have been going beyond talking about what might be possible solutions to problems facing the larger society to actually implementing policy changes which get at their root causes. Focusing on three critical issues, viewers see a diverse range of students try to implement an innovative solution to devastation caused along the Gulf Coast by Hurricane Katrina, successfully raise the minimum wage in San Jose California, and develop policies to confront increasing cases of homelessness among college students. While many of us feel increasing frustration and powerlessness when confronted with the nation’s seeming inability to solve the many pressing social problems it faces, Walk the Walk provides a model for democracy to come alive in our nation’s classrooms, in the process, educating and invigorating students to improve the communities and larger society they inhabit.
