Play Like a Lion travels India from steamy Kolkata, to the Mughal capital at Fatehpur Sikri, from the palace of Rajasthan’s royal court in Jodhpur, to the boyhood Maihar home of iconic Indian musician Ali Akbar Khan to understand the beauty and fragility of an age old musical tradition. Multi-Grammy nominated Ali Akbar Khan—“The Emperor of Melody”—helped introduce Indian classical music to the US at New York’s Museum of Modern Art and on Alistair Cooke hosted Omnibus television in 1955. Khan was proclaimed a “national treasure” in India and is a National Heritage honoree in the US. Ali Akbar Khan’s son Alam is the musical journey’s guide, with commentaries by Carlos Santana, the Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart, slide guitarist Derek Trucks, jazz saxophonist John Handy, Khan’s eldest son virtuoso sarodist Aashish Khan and tabla masters Zakir Hussain and Swapan Chaudhuri to a soundtrack of Ali Akbar Khan's music—“the sound of singing water." Directed by Joshua Dylan Mellars.
