Hurricane season turns the nation's attention to tropical storms and the threat to life and property. When destructive storms come ashore, they may dominate the news for a few days. Then they, and the communities ravaged, are often forgotten. This happened to three small towns in eastern North Carolina following Hurricane Matthew in 2016. Their struggle to recove and setbacks from a second hurricane in 2018, brings to life the realities of disaster recovery. There are lessons here for all, especially rural communities with limited resources.
