Most abortions were illegal in the United States before 1973, but they were still available. Many women risked going to strangers who provided unsafe procedures. Some trained physicians terminated pregnancies secretly for their patients who paid thousands of dollars. Meanwhile doctors, midwives, and others risked arrest to provide safer, low-cost illegal care. This film weaves together two parallel stories: the evolution of illegal networks that helped women find safe abortions, and efforts by activists to challenge the law. Rare archival footage and interviews document the efforts of those who fought to legalize abortion when it was a crime.
