DeBakey is an inspiring documentary about the life of famed heart surgeon Michael E. DeBakey, produced by Dr. Tony Herring, a student of DeBakey’s in the 1960’s. Through his rare interviews with Dr. DeBakey, he takes viewers on a journey to learn about the incredible life and career of his mentor and teacher. The documentary is directed by acclaimed film director Ken Mandel.
Dr. DeBakey’s career spanned over seventy years, and his work has touched the lives of millions of people of all nations. In World War II he developed surgical principles which were the beginning of the M.A.S.H. unit. He helped lay the foundations for both the Veterans Administration Hospital system and the National Library of Medicine.
His presence in Houston helped build the Texas Medical Center, which is the largest medical center in the world. His innovations in the field of cardiovascular surgery are legendary and include development of the roller pump for cardiac bypass, the treatment of complex aortic aneurysms, carotid and coronary bypass surgery, and the left ventricular assist device. He is truly a national treasure. In 2007 Dr. DeBakey was awarded the Gold Congressional Medal of Honor.
