Short Description: August 7, 2017 marks the 75th anniversary of the start of one of the most important battles in American history on Guadalcanal, in the Solomon Islands. Australian historian John Innes takes us on a tour of the actual battlefields, and tells us about the efforts to find and return the remains of many soldiers on both sides. We also meet a Marine involved in the landing, a Navy flyer who was shot down behind enemy lines and lived in a life raft for 15 days and a PT boat captain with insight into the battle on the sea. We expect much media attention around that date because of ceremonies marking the anniversary. Most of the vets of Guadalcanal are gone, but the older generation will be fascinated with this flashback in history, and many children and grandchildren of the veterans of Guadalcanal have deep interest in the battle.
