KLVX - Enriching life, exploring the world

(Posted May 1, 2003) For 35 years, KLVX in Las Vegas has been enriching life, stimulating thinking, and increasing understanding of our world.  KLVX is licensed to the Clark County Board of School Trustees, broadcasts 24/7, and has 55 full time and 24 part time employees.  “Thanks to the involvement of our more than 12,000 members, we have the opportunity to produce and present quality programs that inform, explore, and entertain,” said GM Tom Axtell.

The latest addition to the KLVX Communications Group is KLVX-DT (digital channel 11), and the network is completing its multicasting equipment project.  The Group also includes Channel 10 (and its 29 translators), 20 closed-circuit ITFS channels for educational programming, satellite downlink and uplink services,
two educational cable channels, and a 10,000-channel video-on-demand server connected to 300 sites.  There are approximately 590,000 television households in the KLVX broadcast areas in Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and California.  The station provides educational, public affairs, and cultural programming to 820,000 viewers monthly.

Instructional programming is available via satellite to schools throughout Nevada, and
multi-media educational services are provided in southern Nevada.  Homework Hotline (sponsored by Clark County School District, Desert Volkswagen-Audi, and State Farm Insurance) provides answers to students’ questions about their homework.   Varsity Quiz, now in its 32nd  season, features southern Nevada High School teams competing for academic honors. The Clark County School District, the Kiwanis Club of Las Vegas, and Station Casinos sponsor the program.

More than 30 high school courses have been produced.  Enrollments for these courses, which are available via broadcast, cable, and videotape, topped 4,200 this year, making KLVX Nevada’s largest (by headcount) high school.  With the cooperation of the University of Nevada Las Vegas, dozens of professional certification courses have been produced.

  KLVX's award-winning Sat-Chats
KLVX SAT-Chats (Science And Technology Chats) increase students’ (grades 5-8) understanding of science and technology careers, and participation and curriculum are free. The series has won four Electronic Media Awards from the Las Vegas chapter of Working in Communications.  KLVX has won 18 awards in recent years, including two Emmys and the Radio and Television News Directors Association’s Edward R. Murrow Award.  Viewer ratings consistently rank KLVX in the top 10 PBS stations in the nation.

KLVX ITV publishes three newsletters – the ITV Newsletter for teachers and librarians; the Ready To Learn Newsletter for teachers, parents, and childcare providers; and the Distance Learning Satellite Service Newsletter.  ITV Utilization workshops train school staff in curriculum integration, equipment set-up, and technical troubleshooting.  Workshop topics include Using Technology in the Classroom, Brain-based Learning and Technology, and Media Literacy.  TeacherLine provides teachers with online professional development classes in mathematics and technology integration.  Ready To Learn workshops teach parents, educators, and childcare providers how to teach literacy through television, books, and the web.
The KLVX Educational Media Center, a library of more than 11,000 non-broadcast titles in all curriculum areas in a variety of formats serves the Clark County School District.  Inside Education, KLVX’s weekly television newsmagazine, provides information about the district, the nation's sixth largest school system.

The station’s public affairs/cultural programming includes Direct Access, a monthly call-in program that provides viewers immediate access to and answers from their governor.  Capitol Issues, a co-production with KNPB-TV Reno, is a weekly legislative wrap-up.  Area journalists discuss local news on Nevada Week in Review.  Outdoor Nevada, a weekly program, highlights statewide recreational activities.  The First 100, a series on the first hundred years of Las Vegas, features 100 southern Nevadans’ roles in creating the city’s one-of-kind culture.

Since KLVX launched its single signal in1968, its own “first 35” story is one of programming diversification, facilities expansion, and technological advancements.  The station now has 16 simultaneous channels informing, exploring, and entertaining, but the KLVX Communications Group, still true to its story’s beginning, remains focused clearly on education.
