KLCS:
Education Station for All Generations
- by Diane Jowers |
(Posted
July 1, 2002) From San Diego to Santa Barbara,
Southern Californians look to KLCS-TV, the education station for all
generations, for life-enriching learning experiences.
KLCS began broadcasting in 1973 and is one of four Los Angeles area PBS stations. It has 53 employees and is a 24/7 operation.
|
The station is owned
by the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the nation's second largest public
school system, and is carried by all Southern California cable systems. Its potential audience includes five million
households and 900,000 students and 100,000 personnel in 23 school districts. We are proud to be one of only eight
television stations in the nation licensed to a K-12 school district. As the broadcast arm of the LAUSD, we strive to
produce programming that reflects state standards and meets the instructional and
professional development needs of the district, said General Manager Janalyn Glymph.

KLCS
produces more local programming than any other public television station in Southern
California, programming that often receives recognition for excellence. Homework Hotline, a live, daily, interactive math, science, and English
program, has won two Emmy Awards. News Briefs,
which features events at LAUSD schools, and Hollywood Homeroom, a
how-to on using video technology
effectively in the classroom, have received Emmys also. |

Target,
a public service announcement on Internet safety, won a National Association of
Telecommunications Officers and Advisors STAR award and an Emmy. The National School
Public Relations Association has presented Golden Achievement awards to KLCS for print
publications and for its Choices/ Opciones 2001,
Democratic National Convention, and Video
in the Classroom Awards programs.
Other educational programming includes In Their Own
Words, which highlights LAUSD functions. Teachers Lounge and A Conversation with Roy Romer (LAUSD superintendent
of schools) provide education issues forums. Teachers and Their Coaches, a professional
development program, provides practical and inspirational information for teachers.
Providing life-long learning opportunities for our diverse audience is crucial to
our mission. Our general audience schedule
entertains and educates with travel, history, nature, public affairs, and
how-to programs, said Glymph. Between the Lines is a weekly discussion series that
features well-known authors and journalists, and there is a series that teaches
guitar.
|
While creating and
presenting award-winning educational and general audience programming, KLCS is focused on
digital conversion also. The station has
reconfigured its infrastructure for digital capability, and a dual-purpose antenna will be
installed to ensure continuation of the analog signal while digital broadcast gains viewer
support. KLCS will upgrade its digital
production capabilities, enabling it to significantly expand program offerings.
|
| As the station works
toward its technological goals, its development and fund-raising efforts are continuous. A recent, successful pledge drive showcased
filmmaking achievements of women and students. Because
so many production companies are attracted to the KLCS layout, there is steady studio
rental income. Our partnerships with
educational institutions, community organizations, and businesses increase public
awareness and support of KLCS. We
continuously explore and develop mutually beneficial relationships throughout the
communities that we serve, said Glymph. |
