    This series, based on David Macaulay’s book of the same name, reveals the splendor of Egypt and its pyramids.  Animated and live-action documentary sequences explain why and how the pyramids were built.  Viewers see characters in situations representative of the Old Kingdom period and visit the Valley of the Kings and the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

    1. “What Was Ancient Egypt Like?” addresses Egypt’s geography and the importance of the Nile.  The unification of Upper and Lower Egypt, dynasties, and social and religious customs (including mummification) are discussed. (19:51) 
     
    2. “Why Were the Pyramids Built?” presents the myth of Osiris and the development of the pyramids, including their social, cultural, religious, and political significance. (19:31)

     
    3. “How Were the Pyramids Built?” describes the theories of pyramid construction, the builders, and the tools of the time.   Tutankhamen’s tomb, the Rosetta Stone, hieroglyphics, and archaeology are discussed. (18:54)
